Toyota Decision on sports car project with BMW due soon

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW will determine by yearend on whether to create a typical sports-car architecture, Toyota executives stated on Wednesday.
BMW and Toyota are collaborating on fuel-cell technologies, light weight parts, and on perhaps together developing the underpinnings of a sportscar.
Talking on the sidelines of the Frankfurt autoshow, Johan van Zyl, head of Toyota's European operations, stated all three jobs were progressing nicely.
"They're all-on schedule as well as on course," van Zyl mentioned.
A spokesman for the firm included that the choice on the sports-car, which will spawn individual vehicles for every trade name, could be produced in the near-term.
"From the conclusion of the year we are going to approve whether or not we will make it," the spokesman mentioned. "The entire study before that, on the type of stage, on the type of architecture, which has been been progressing fairly nicely. We have not however determined to give the greenlight to the task, but it is coming up."
BMW Chief Financial Officer Friedrich Eichiner said on Tuesday the firm was in negotiations with Toyota about intensifying the cooperation, but gave no particulars. Van Zyl declined opinion on the problem.
The Toyota executive said the car-maker sales in Europe were probably to drop 1 to 2% in 2013 on the trunk of the drop-off in the Russian marketplace. He predict a minimal upsurge in European revenue next year, but this was too soon to quantify.
