Infiniti EV delayed to add better technology.
LONDON - The head of Nissan world-wide planning says Infiniti's electric vehicle was delayed since the premium automaker would like to integrate more complex charging and battery technology into the vehicle.
Andy Palmer denied speculation the delay suggested that parent Nissan and Infiniti were losing interest in electric cars.
The automobile was scheduled for launch in 2015. Palmer declined to place a brand new date on such launch, but said it was "not substantially" delayed.
"It is still within our midterm strategy," he said, without elaborating.
"There are a few interesting advances in electrical technology we had not expected when we showed the LE, which, by delaying just a little bit, we can integrate into the vehicle," he explained.
Infiniti also plans to feature new lithium ion battery technology that Palmer said is really great that it only justified the auto's delay. Without going into detail, he said the batteries would supply increase variety in a lower cost.
Like all carmakers within the EV sector, Infiniti's parent has fought to convince users to change to batterypowered automobiles with no aid of generous government subsidies. Carlos Ghosn who is CHIEF Executive of Nissan too as its coalition partner, Renault, said in May that the RenaultNissan would fight to fulfill his objective of 1.5 million EV sales by the end of the 2016 financial year.
Nissan failed to hit its aim of selling 9, 000 Leafs in Europe, ending the year with a quantity of 5, 192, based on market researcher JATO Dynamics last year.
This year, however, Leaf sales have improved following the beginning of European production in britain too as performance upgrades including a range increase to 199km from 175km.
