What is Graduated Licensing in Ontario?
First, let’s talk about graduated licensing.
Graduated licensing in Ontario is a system of getting your driver’s license when you are young. It has three levels: G1, G2, and G for full privileges. You must pass certain tests at each level in order to have full driving privileges for that level.
If you are applying to get your driver’s license, you must provide the Ministry of Transportation with proof that you have completed all tests successfully. You can do this by using our G1 practice test to prepare yourself for the exam. You can find them at https://www.apnatoronto.com/ontario-g1-test/.

Helpful Tips for Passing the G1 Test
To pass the G1 license test the first time, it’s important that you prepare yourself. The best way to do this is by using our G1 practice tests. By practicing with these multiple-choice tests, you’ll know exactly what to expect from the official written exam and be able to answer any question they throw at you!
1. Practice As Much As You Can
Use free online practice tests like ours to help you out with this! Score high on your written test. Get an official Ontario handbook and study it before the day of the test. When you do this, you’ll feel more confident when it is time to take the actual test.
Try your best to simulate the actual test environment as much as possible. This means getting rid of all distractions and possibly even having a friend or family member time you. This will give you a feel for what to expect on test day and help you brush up on your timing.
2. Understand Your Road Signs
The road signs in the official test are from a list of common signs that appear in Ontario. Make sure you know them inside and out! This can sometimes be tricky because there are often road signs that you’ve never seen before.
Some road signs can even be pretty similar. That’s why it’s important to practice with a free G1 practice test. These booklets have all the signs that can appear on the G1 test printed out for you, so it’s easy to study.
3. Think of the Test in Three Sections
There are three parts to the G1 written test:
General Safety Awareness
The first part of the test will be about general road safety principles. You’ll need to learn everything you can about dangerous driving situations and what you need to do to avoid them.
The second part of the test will be identifying road signs.
Trouble Signs (Including Intersections)
The third part of the test will be about trouble signs at intersections, including stop signs, yield signs, and railway crossings. You’ll need to learn everything you can about identifying these signs and what to do when you’re faced with them.
4. Know the Test Format
The official written test for G1 has 40 multiple-choice questions. You’ll have to answer 35 of these questions correctly in order to pass. Knowing this will help you know how to prepare.
For example, you’ll need to score 75% in order to pass. This means you’d have to answer about 27 questions correctly in the test and only one wrong. An interesting fact is that this means you can actually fail the test with 34 correct answers!
5. Understand the Format of a Multiple-Choice Question
There are four different types of multiple-choice questions that you may come across for this test. Each type tests your understanding of the general road safety principles.
The first type is matching, where you will have a description of a dangerous driving situation and then must match it up to the correct response.
The second type is multiple choice, where you will have to choose one of four possible responses.
A third type is ordering the steps in a flow chart. In this case, you have a flow chart and have to answer questions about it.
The final type is identifying a danger sign. You will see either a picture or actual signage and have to pick out which sign it is from a multiple-choice list.
6. Know the Rules of the Road
These are just as important as learning about road signs. You need to know everything about the rules of the road so that you can drive safely.
For example, you need to know how to share the road with other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. You also need to understand how to signal and make turns.
Additionally, you should know about road markings such as lanes, lines, and intersections.
7. Don’t Forget to Read the Questions Carefully!
This is an easy mistake to make that can cost you a lot on test day. Be sure not to rush through questions and always read each question carefully before choosing an answer.
You have to be careful here. In some cases, you might misread a question and answer it incorrectly because of this mistake.
For example, if a question asks “what is the speed limit?” and you read it as “how fast can you drive?” then you might choose the wrong answer.
Although this test is challenging, it’s definitely doable. However, you’ll have to prepare for it if you want to pass it. To start preparing, sign up to take a free practice test today.
