BMW developing plug-in hybrid X1
A fresh report taken from Australia finds BMW is contemplating starting a plugin hybrid edition of the all-new 2016 X1.
"Of course it is potential. The layout is similar [to the 2 String Active Tourer] so in theory we could do this, but we've to see if clients need it," revealed a source close to BMW in an interview with Australian web site Motoring.Tentatively called X-1 eDrive, the plugin soft-roader will probably be powered by a gas-electric drivetrain constructed around a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine rated at 136 hp and 162 pound-ft. of torque. Linked to a six-speed automatic transmission, the three-banger will work together with a little electric motor capable of zapping the back wheels with 88 hp and 122 pounds-ft. of torque. Mounted over the back axle, the electric motor will be able to power the X1 by itself for up to 23 miles. Instead, the two power sources will be capable of working collectively to return up to 117 mpg in a miscellaneous European cycle. If the rumour turns out to be accurate, the first-ever BMW X1 plugin hybrid vehicle will be presented to the people at a leading auto show next year, and it'll land in showrooms in time for the 2017 model year. Anticipate the plugin X-1 to carry a premium over its gasoline-burning counterpart. What is next?
At the other end of the spectrum, BMW has recently suggested it could introduce the first-ever X1 M in order to fend off competition from the 381-hp Mercedes-AMG GLA 45. Probably powered with a turbocharged four-cylinder motor, the lowest M-tuned crossover is going to have the capacity to reach 60 mph from a stop in significantly less than six seconds.
