Car bomb blasts kill 26 in crowded Baghdad markets

BAGHDAD -- Some of car bombs exploded Wednesday at busy popular marketplaces in mainly Shiite areas of the Iraqi funds, Baghdad, killing at least 26 people and wounding 5 8, authorities said. The first explosion occurred in the impoverished area of al Bayaa in south-western Baghdad, a police official said. The blast killed at least 18 people and wounded 3 6, the the state said. After Wednesday, another car bomb detonated in the north eastern area of al Shaab, killing at least eight people and wounding 22, authorities said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assaults. On Friday, the militant group assaulted a popular marketplace in Iraq's eastern Diyala province, killing 115 people - most of them Shiite - and injure more than 170 in what was certainly one of the biggest single assaults in Iraq within the previous decade. Bombardments happen nearly daily in Baghdad, but violence continues to be relatively subdued in the the main city considering that the peak of sectarian violence in 2006 and 2007, when hundreds were killed throughout the country nearly daily.
