Dangers of IndyCar open-cockpit racing back in spotlight

The auto-racing world is recalling IndyCar driver Justin Wilson, who died Monday from a head-injury experienced a day before. The racer was hit in the head with a flying part of rubble from another crashed automobile in the Pocono Raceway, knocking him unconscious. Wilson was air-lifted into a hospital, where he never re-covered, reviews CBSN's Jeff Glor.Wilson was a dad, husband and gifted race car driver. The 37-year old was an advocate for racing security, but what occurred on the monitor Sunday was something even he could not have prevented. Wilson, a seven-time IndyCar victor, was among the very well-liked and well-honored motorists on the racetrack. Security issues for motorists in open-cockpit vehicles is not a a new problem. A year ago, James Hinchcliffe was hospitalized and diagnosed using a concussion after being hit in the head with rubble, really from an automobile driven by Wilson. In 2011, IndyCar posterboy Dan Wheldon was killed immediately when his head hit a fence-post within a significant crash. "Times such as this that are incredibly difficult on all people. As challenging as now is and yesterday was, he is doing what he loved to do, and what we all love to do," fellow IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter stated. Carpenter understands first-hand racing vehicles for a dwelling is a hazardous company. His IndyCar burst right into a wall at almost 200 miles per hour in a training run before in 2013. Unlike NASCAR, where motorists are completely enclosed inside their automobiles, IndyCar racers sit in a open cockpit. There was not a departure at a NASCAR race in 14 years, perhaps not since renowned Dale Earnhardt was killed at Daytona in 2001.The winner of Sunday's IndyCar race, Ryan Hunter Reay, mentioned the athletics should contemplate giving racers some kind of canopy for safety, while also maintaining IndyCar convention.
