Last Up-Dated Jul 23, 2015 5:23 PM EDTSAWMILLS, N.C. - A rusty, mud-caked sedan pulled in the base of a lake in the foothills of the New York mountains could provide close to the household of a retired airman who vanished 43 years past. The Caldwell County Sheriff's Office says the human remains discovered in a 1968 Pontiac Catalina regained from an area lake may help solve the case of Amos Shook, who had been reported missing on Feb. 19, 1972.The sheriff stated the version fits the vehicle that belonged to Shook, and the pocket book located in the automobile seems to be his."We discovered a pocket book and some I-D cards in it. It astonished us how maintained that things was," Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones said in a news conference. The four door sedan was caked in mud and revealed some rust, but the windows were complete after it had been pulled from Lake Rhodhiss about 75 miles northwest of Charlotte.Sheriff's Lt. Aaron Barlowe said the remains discovered Tuesday are heading to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy and identification. Barlowe stated there were no first indications of foul play. Authorities say the investigation for Shook was restarted after his daughter approached investigators last month using a news article about her lost dad and requested them to hunt again. But few if any records in the first investigation were left when investigators searched their documents, Jones said. View of Lake Rhodhiss, in Caldwell County, N.C.

"Records from that way back, there is not a lot that has been left because I understand we appeared for it," he said. Barlowe would not say what led investigators to the lake, but added that researchers and a dive group employed state-of-the-art sonar to locate the automobile in 30-feet of water. Shook, who was 44 when he vanished, had retired in the U.S. Airforce and lived in the township of Sawmills, according to Barlowe, who mentioned his remaining family members reside throughout Tn.Given the time that is handed, authorities might not be able to say definitively what occurred to Shook. However, the sheriff stated that he expects the discovery provides his family some peace of mind."They Are only very happy to get close," he said. Caldwell County is a predominantly rural county in the North Carolina foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The county's web site says the first contemporary furniture factories were formed there in 1889. Now, as well as furniture production, the county is host into a Google data-center as authorities try to incorporate technology and information-based businesses to the area market. Read Source
