Fiat Punto Reviews
Fiat sold 247 Abarth Puntos in britain, this past year. Seventeen times as much. Perhaps it is somewhat unfair to compare the Punto with the Cooper, but think about this: UK clients purchased over 1000 Abarth 500s in the exact same year.
Therefore the British response to the Abarth Punto is a resounding chorus of meh. Now, however there is a fresh one, based in the facelifted Punto 'Evo', also it will, written down at least, bring a couple more punters.
The Abarth Punto gets a turbocharged variant of Fiat's 1.4litre 'MultiAir' motor, with apt valve direction saving buckets of fuel and boosting torque. An SS update arrives shortly, adding 20bhp or so.
A disclaimer. We just drove the Punto around the marblesmooth tarmac of Fiat's Balocco test track. We'll withhold final judgment until we have got it on a filthy B-road, however the trip felt nicely judged: predictable and grippy, or even as direct and solid while the Clio 200.
It is considerably sharper compared to the old Punto, however. It is useful, tucking the nose in much tighter on sharp bends and restricting understeer. It is so powerful, actually, it is hard to envision a scenario where you had desire to change it off.
For an item of the business accountable for the hyper-active, puppyish Abarth 500, the Punto is really a surprisingly mature thing. Does it bring a number of new clients? Most likely not.
But should you really think about the Punto Abarth as a miniature GT rather than a hot-hatch, a vehicle for efficient day-to-day dreary stuff with a little fizz if you want it, it makes more sense. Continue, give a dwelling to an Abarth.
