BMW 5-series hybrid

BMW is updating its models with plug-in hybrid. There has been already the X5 hybrid and the next generation of 7-series equipped with the hybrid system.
Now, we have got the confirmation that the 5-series, which is under updating now will be equipped also with the plug-in hybrid tech.

The updated 5-series is the G30, its codename. The novelty is expected to come in 2017 as a car of 2016 model year.

The G30 is built on the brand’s 35up platform. That platform is used in all new BMW cars starting from 3-series and up.

The 35up modular platform allows using lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum that help reducing the car’s weight as well. Owing to that platform, the new 5-series weighs 3,300 pounds that is lighter by 220 lbs than the present version.

Currently, we are not sure which powertrain will be used in the new 5-series. However, we may suppose it will be the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which collaborates with the electric motor. The plug-in hybrid system will work with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The electric motor is expected to be quite powerful to power the vehicle on its own; while the internal combustion engine will help it on high loads.

The electric motor is the lithium-ion battery set in the trunk. It is charged up at home or on the run with the regenerative braking and energy from the engine.
By the way, both X5 and new 3-series has been equipped with the same plug-in hybrid technology.

According to the carmaker, that plug-in hybrid powertrain is able to produce the output of 245 horsepower and the torque of 295 lb-ft. That output may be compared with the six-cylinder powertrain. Moreover, the auto manufacturer plans to name it the 530e. For instance, BMW sells the long-wheelbase 530Le on the Chinese auto market as well.

BMW is planning to present the 5-series hybrid at the beginning of next year.
