BMW planning first-ever X1 M
BMW is debating whether to develop a variety-topping M-tuned variant of the 2016 X1, a new study finds.
"We understand our competitors' offers, of course, and we understand our purchasers would adore an M model, but at this point it is too soon to say [if we'll assemble one]," disclosed an interior source in an interview with Australian web site Motoring. The source was referring to the Audi RS Q3 and the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, 2 of the X-1 M's closest rivals in terms of size and power. The RS Q3 packages a 2.5-liter straight-five engine rated at 335 hp and 331 pounds-ft. of torque, while the GLA 45 ups the ante with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder factory that makes 355 ponies and 332 pounds-ft. of turn. Just what the X1 M will be powered by is up in the air now. Nevertheless, BMW's lowest crossover rides on the same front-wheel drive UKL platform as the MINI so it's powered by a transversally-mounted engine, which means a straight-six will not fit under the hood. By process of elimination, the X1 M will use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Regardless of what is under the hood, an 8-speed automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles will send power to all four wheels. The M will be able to sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155 miles per hour.
If it gets the green light for creation, the first-ever BMW X1 M could be presented to the public next March at the Geneva Motor Show. Unlike the RS Q3, the X1 M is anticipated to join the GLA 4 5 AMG on our coasts.
