Fiat, Mazda clone a Miata to bring the Fiat 124 Spider back to life
Within an age when scientific researchers have used contentious cloning technology to genetically copy treasured family animals, it is small question that Fiat-Chrysler would undertake related attempts to restore a precious and powerful Fiat nameplate from its earlier.
That is basically what FCA did using the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider disclosed for the very first time today at the Los Angeles auto-show.
FCA has has had a donor auto with a great pedigree -- the mx5 Mazda Miata -- and grafted into it it a Fiat 1.4-litre turbocharged i4 motor and styling to make it appear like a suitable descendent of the first Pininfarina-created Fiat 124 that debuted in November 1966 in Fiat's house in Torino, Italy.
"There is not any better method to celebrate 50 years of the Fiat 124 Spider than to recreate this iconic roadster, matching its Italian styling of the earlier together with all the current functionality and technology of now," Olivier Francois, worldwide head of the Fiat manufacturer, mentioned in a statement. "The 124 Spider enlarges the Fiat family, bringing to promote yet another head-turning, enjoyable-to-drive car for our clients."
Though some have dubbed it the "Fiata" due to the Miata underpinnings, the Fiat 124 does not discuss any body panels with its Mazda cousin. The Fiat 124 is longer, broader and half-an inch shorter compared to the Miata, and its 160-hp turbo-charged motor has five more horse power in relation to the Miata and makes 184 pounds-feet of torque, in comparison with the Miata's 148. The Fiat is around 100 lbs heavier, with respect to the trim level, than its Mazda cousin. Both convertibles are accessible with six-speed manual or automated gearboxes.
The rear wheel drive 124's suspension, such as the Miata, uses a double-wishbone in front and Multi Link in the trunk to enhance road dynamics and handling, and uses electric power assisted steering.
From a styling point of view, the Fiat 124's distinguishing nose harkens back to the late-1960s roadster, using its bulging eyes and hexagonal upper grille. In the rear, identifying tail lamps also re-call the first 124's flat light, while raised regions over the taillights bring back even more of the first Pininfarina layout.
In the cottage, the differences involving the Miata and Fiat 124 are more difficult to see, excluding some distinct accessible substances as well as another symbol on the middle of the steering-wheel. The 124 makes use of Mazda's discretionary 7-inch touch screen to place its Fiat link infotainment program.
The 2017 Fiat 124 can come in two trim levels, the foundation-amount Classica and upper level Lusso. Fiat says that to celebrate the return of the roadster, the first 124 created will be numbered and badged as a limitededition Prima Edizione Lusso, and accessible only with Saddle leather insides and Azzuro Italia blue.
The 124 has been constructed by Mazda in its manufacturing plant in Hiroshima, Japan, and can be imported to America next year. Pricing and fuel-economy are not declared.
Fiat stated it anticipates the roadster to be around in its 208 U.S. car dealers in the summertime of 2016.
The 124 is one of two automobiles being disclosed in the Los Angeles auto-show by FCA. The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia sport-sedan can be making its us introduction, after being disclosed in June in Italy.
