The Geneva Motor Show: Ferrari LaFerrari
LaFerrari is a name of the new coupe of Maranello, a successor of Enzo model and the leader of Ferrari. The fastest, the most powerful, the most advanced vehicle with a prancing stallion on the logo has become a real adornment of the Geneva motor show and proudly has the legendary name, took all experience of engineers of the Italian brand and a team Scuderia Ferrari.
The basis of LaFerrari is made of carbon-fiber by the same department, which develops Formula 1 vehicles. In comparison with Enzo, the torsional rigidity is increased by 27%, and the bending rigidity - by 22%, the center of gravity is lowered by 35 mm. 59% of the mass of a mid-engine coupe falls on the rear axle because the Ferrari engineers considered this optimal weight distribution.
The body was thoroughly blown in the wind tunnel of Scuderia Ferrari and a coupe got the active elements making the down force when it is needed. The Italians did not dilate on details but probably owing to special sections in the front bumper and a rear diffuser. LaFerrari is Ferrari's first gasoline-electric hybrid model. It is powered by the HY-KERS system.
There are two electric motors in LaFerrari. One with a capacity of 120 kW coupled with a seven-speed robotic gearbox with double clutch and drives the rear wheels, and another supplies the associated equipment. There is the 60-kilograms battery pack behind the seats. The batteries are charged in two ways: during braking and every time the V12 produces more torque than required, such as in cornering.
LaFerrari has composite carbon-ceramic brakes (diameter front discs - 398 mm, rear - 380 mm), the chassis with active shock-absorbers, an electronically rear differential E-Diff 3, and the traction control system, operating with plug-in hybrid. As a result LaFerrari has a lap time of less than 1 minute, 20 seconds on the company's test track in Fiorano and it is faster than the Enzo by 5 seconds!
Pilots of Scuderia Ferrari team Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa contributed on the design of a car. Racers worked at a driver’s position - LaFerrari has a fixed seat, and the steering wheel and pedals are regulated. Ferrari will build 499 units of LaFerrari, 100 more than the Enzo. The base version of LaFerrari will cost an estimated 1.21 million euros.
