VW investigated in Germany for tax evasion on false CO2 levels
FRANKFURT -- German prosecutors have started an investigation into suspected tax-evasion associated with the understating of CO2 amounts in Volkswagen team automobiles that focuses on five VW workers. The workers are not identified.
The prosecutors in Brunswick, near Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters, are studying whether Volkswagen was accountable for the German government perhaps not getting its due share of automotive taxes following the car-maker under-stated the carbon dioxide emissions in a lot of its own vehicles, a lot of which were marketed in Germany.
A vehicle's carbon dioxide emissions help determine just how much tax automobile owners should spend every yr in certain markets, including Germany.
The primary focus of the probe is tax-evasion, but it may also entail fraud, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office mentioned.
The harm resulting from the tax-evasion is "not trivial," a member of the prosecutor's office told Automotive News Europe.
Europe's biggest automaker declared on Nov. 3 that CO2 emissions data from about 800,000 automobiles were untrue and stated payment payments to clients and other expenses connected to the malfeasance could total 2 billion euros ($2.13 billion).
Prosecutors in Brunswick are currently considering Volkswagen's diesel engines. Investigators last month raided the auto-maker main offices as well as other offices within their probe to the car-maker rigging of diesel-emissions evaluations.
Volkswagen revealed in September that several its own diesel engines were equipped with computer software built to mislead discharges examiners, changing about 1 1 million automobiles worldwide.
