Volvo gives back classic shapes
The Volvo Company changes the exterior of their cars. But instead of presenting to the public by a new model per a year, as other companies, the Swedish manufacturer told all their innovations at once. The exterior of the car is backed to the classical forms, but the multimedia and safety systems turned to the higher level. In all probability, Swedish engineers expect to ignite the interest of their clients by the new design and modern features, as well as to produce on the same modular platform.
The new sedan S60 is the latest model of the modern design. Judging by the first pictures of models XC60, S80, S60 and XC70 that will be produced in 2014-2015, Volvo designers decided to change from adventurous exterior to the traditional one.
The grandiose upgrade will happen in 2014, when there will be a replacement of the outmoded crossover XC90. A novelty will get a high and very cool hood and really short overhangs. There are no photos of the new crossover yet there, so we should take on trust and wait for it to appear.
But Volvo published pictures of six new vehicles: S60 and S80, V60 and V70, XC70 and XC60.
The first noticeable thing in the photos XC60 is the protection of an ordinary plastic body color instead of the black plastic across the bottom of a crossover. The second one is updated bumpers and vertical back lights.
In 2015, there will be updated S80 and V80. The leader of Volvo with not so provoking headlights now looks more classically. Back lamps of novelties have also classical forms. S60 and V60 will be designed in a similar style and equipped with sports suspension. Also the Volvo line will be added by a new coupe with 2 +2 formula seating - the body will be shorter than S80 has, but the interior will be the same spacious and elegant.
All cars will get a new interior with more modern TFT-displays, as well as the multimedia system Sensus Connected Touch with 7.0-inch touch screen. We will be able to touch such a display in gloves, what will be really good news for drivers in cold climates.
S80 and XC70 models will be equipped with IntelliSafe system, including sensors that can detect pedestrians and objects at speed of 50 km/h.
Volvo plans to produce all new vehicles on a unified modular platform, as the Volkswagen Group with its MQB. One platform allows producing more cheaply, due to using of identical techniques that will also have a positive influence to the final price of a car.
All cars will get common line of engines: a gasoline engine with output of from 140 to 280 hp, a diesel one of from 120 to 230 hp and three variants of the gearbox - two manual transmissions and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission will get paddle shifters.
Volvo models will be shown at the Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks. Sales in Europe are scheduled in May, and then on the Russian market. The manufacturer expects that in 2013 they will sell nearby 420,000 vehicles in the world.
