Volvo has created a car that finds the parking place
Volvo Car Group has developed a unique concept car with an autonomous parking feature. The car finds an open spot in a traditional parking lot, drives to it and settles itself, without the driver needing to be in the car.
“The autonomous parking is a conceptual technology to make life easier for the driver to find a free parking place. For the driver, it is as simple as pulling into a parking lot and stopping in the designated drop-off zone. From there, they simply click a button on a phone application instructing the car to find a space and park then take it to the same place”, - says Thomas Broberg, senior security consultant of Volvo Car Group.
The Vehicle 2 Infrastructure technology includes transmitters in the road infrastructure, which inform the driver about the availability of this service. The driver uses a mobile phone application to activate the autonomous parking feature and then go out of the car.
The system uses sensors and transmitters in the road to locate a vacant spot and then park itself, all the while avoiding pedestrians and other moving vehicles. The system controls speed and breaking needs for optimal moving in the parking lot.
The first autonomous parking feature will be in the new Volvo XC90, which will be presented at the end of 2014.
