BMW M6 Reviews
BMW M6
In 1983 at the Frankfurt Auto Show BMW Company introduced M635CSI produced by Motosport GmbH branch. The car had the cabin E24 and robust high speed 6-cylindered engine M88/3 V3453 cm with power of 286 hp and top speed of 255 km/h. The automobile speeded up to 100 km/h in 6,5 seconds. At first such engine was elaborated for sport bolides M1. The motor was certainly changed a little. For example, refrigeration system and lubricates were reworked so that engine could be located on the 30 degrees angle in motor part in the contrast with M1 where the engine was located vertically. The lubricate with dry carter was changed to a common lubricate as in the 635CSI model.
M635 CSi almost did not differ from standard 635 CSi by exterior. Front spoiler was lower and wings arches were a little bit wider. Exterior was completed by 16-inches demountable BBS alloys and an altered forward skirt with a ridge border on a bottom. Small aerodynamically wing on the driver’s wiper is also worth to be mentioned. 3-colored sport wheel was in standard configuration but sport seats Recaro were optionally.
Front brakes were made with increased (300mmx30mm) ventilated discs with 4piston ATE supports. Rear breaks in fact were identical to the 635CSi model but supports were with pistons increased by 2 mm. The axle was equipped by 10 mm lower and 15% harder spring with specially elaborated by Bilstein company gas dampers and reinforced stabilizers.
M635 CSi appeared in USA market in 1987 under shortened name M6. Its engine was equipped with catalytic Converter and had a lower degree of compression therefore its power was of 256 hp. Simultaneously the index was engine was changed from M88 to S38 where S refered to its BMW Motorsport GmbH origin.
In 1989 the last configuration of the M635 CSi (М6) of first generation was issued.
In 2005 the M6 model came back after long interruption. The M6 second generation is a typical representative of supercars. The exterior has common elements with the 6-series model. But “M” differs by increased air intakes, another appearance side mirrors, changed shape of front sides and twin connecting pipes silencer. The brightest detail reflecting supercar soul in M6 are huge 19-inch wheels able to accommodate ventilated break discs of 384 mm in diameter in front and of 345 mm in the rear. Especially for M6 4 unique exterior colors are suggested: red Indianapolis, bronze Sepang, dark blue Interlagos and silver Silverstone.
The interior impresses by sport leather seats with belt support and electrical adjustment. Luxury leather trim of front panel is advantageously combined with carbon insets. The impressive picture is completed with ceiling paneled with dark chamois and changeless iDrive with a large LCD display and controller. Wherever your eyes – on the bottom spoke of steering wheel, on thresholds and even on the square for left leg relax – you can see M logo.
Elaborating the car the specialist struggled with excess weight. Exterior details are made of lightweight materials. The doors are made of aluminum, front wings – of plastic, and roof – of carbon. The carbon is expensive enough but it is stronger and almost twice lighter than aluminum. As a result the car weighs only 1710 kg.
The model was equipped with 5L aluminum-silicon engine V10 developing 507 hp with torque of 7750 rpm. The car speeds up to 100 km in 4,6 seconds. From 0 to 100 km/h the car speeded up by 4,6 seconds. Speedometer marking reaches 330 km/h though maximum speed is limited by 250 km/ h. It is remarkable that power engine is one of the most complicated by electronic appliances. The engine control unit MS 65 consists of three 32-bit processors, which coordinate more than 200 million operations per second, with the processing of the data from 50 sources.
“Power” button is situated on central console BMW M6. The default adjustment is P400 which makes the engine to work only in 400hp. If the button is pushed the adjustment changes to P500 and 507 hp are activated.
7-speed transmission Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) with Drivelogic system is settled on BMW M6 which offers a choice of 11 operation modes. Six of these options are designed for manual regime and five - for automatic regime. The suspension bracket is created on the basis of "standard" geometry of BMW 645Ci. The double cross-piece of a spring of a forward axis, as well as back axis, is executed completely from aluminum. In standard equipment the electronic system of regulation of rigidity of shock-absorbers (Electronic Damper Control) is offered. The driver of BMW M6 has opportunity at desire to choose one of suspension bracket settings — Comfort, Normal or Sport.
In 2012 new version of the 6-series M BMW was officially announced. It was represented by coupe car (F12) and by convertible (F13) modifications. In comparison with previous generation the model was increased by size. BMW Coupe F 13 reaches 4898 mm in length and 1899 mm in width and 1374 mm in height versus 4871 mm length, 1855 mm width and 1372 mm height of predecessor. Convertible became larger as well but did not withstand the height: 4898 mm in length, 1899 mm in width, 1368 mm in height versus 4871 mm, 1855 mm and 1377 mm.
The new car inherited stylish elegant design from the predecessor. Its aggressive appearance was intensified by new aerodynamically details. Dynamic appearance is highlighted by air intakes dominance, new design of radiator grill with M label, new bumpers, widen wheel arches, ventilate slots in front wings and four pipes of sport system of exhaust.
The standard configuration is equipped by 19-inch alloys covered by tires with dimension of 265/40R19 in front 295/35R19 – rear. 20-inch wheels are available as option as well as carbon-ceramic breaks.
The new interior is rather luxury. Leather trim is almost everywhere. Sport seats were elaborated specially for this model. Carbon and wooden elements dominate inside the car instead of chrome and anodic elements. The steering wheel was also changed. The new one was equipped by bottom switches. The control panel was upgraded. Navigation system, audio system Bang & Olufsen and steering wheel heating are optionally available. Besides, the car can be equipped with system of night vision with recognition of pedestrians, system of tracking a marking, a rear-view camera, and also information and entertaining system with possibility of Internet connection.
The car is powered by 4,4 L V8 twin-turbo engine of 560 hp and 680 N-m of torque connected with 7-speed transmission M-DCT.
Coupe shows acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4,2 seconds, convertible – in 0,1 seconds longer. The maximum speed is limited by 250 km/h but it can be increased by 305 km/h if M Driver’s Packageis chosen.
In spite of the fact that BMW M6 of old generation is equipped with the V10 engine, this car is 10% more powerful. BMW was succeeded to make this car even more economically, the average expense of a compartment in the mixed cycle makes 9,9 liters per 100 km, and a cabriolet expense – 10,3 liters per 100 km. Not least it managed to achieve thanks to work on decrease in weight of cars. So, for example, the roof of a compartment of BMW M6 2012 is executed from a coal plastic, and doors and a cowl – from aluminum. Nevertheless, the mass of a compartment all the same remained very impressive – 1 850 kg, and a cabriolet equipped with a folding roof from composites, 30 kg heavier.
