These were started in the 1994 Turin Motor Show.

A broad and uniquely Italian inside was offered to the press in the 1994 start, and by all accounts nicely received. The strangely shaped, cutaway dash enticed much interest, in fact, the layout was for security and practicality instead of aesthetics.

Centered, because they were, about the Fiat Group's Tipo Due stage, the vehicles were widely praised for their handling, especially their sharp, responsive steering.

In 1996, the main Cloverleaf (145) and Ti (146) versions were started using the 2.0litre Twin Spark engine previously observed in the 155 sister car.
1.6 and 1.8 Twin Spark engines shortly followed to change the less strong boxers.

The 1.8litre and 2.0litre motor vehicles were equipped with 'fast-stand' steering (also observed around the 155, GTV and Spider) which enhanced steering responsiveness, but as an effect the turning circle was compromised. This is also featured in the 1.6litre Junior version in 1998. The sporty suspension setup was harsher than many others in its group in some time, however, this was in accordance with all the Fiat Group's advertising of Alfa Romeo like a sporting brand which is believed to have triggered group leading management.

The more conservatively-styled 146 demonstrated a larger sales success compared to the layout of the 145, which in hindsight seems overly avantgarde for main-stream sales success.

Parts availability remains great, in many cases direct from Alfa Romeo, as the volume of 146s and 145s sold was fairly reduced. Owners clubs could suggest on several sources of components or work-arounds.

Ultimately, in 2000, the vehicles were superseded by the 147, that was a much larger business success, with its enhanced quality and acclaimed styling front-end. Still, many lovers believe it dropped somewhat of the Alfa Romeo and unique feel the 146 and 145 had.
