DOT's Foxx convenes 15 auto executives to discuss safety issues

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -- Senior executives from 1-5 auto makers met Tuesday with U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx to discuss wide-ranging advancements to vehicle security after several serious flaw disasters have tarnished the business's standing in recent years.
In a statement, DOT Press-Secretary Namrata Kolachalam called the meeting "very productive" and stated the team would reconvene in January. Cybersecurity problems were also discussed, although unique potential security and cyber-security initiatives were not revealed.
The business has fought high profile flaw disasters including the General Motors ignition switch and Takata air-bag inflator recalls that have produced regular news headlines. Neglecting to find and correctly evaluate flaws early in the Takata air bag and GM ignition-switch recalls led to the recalls mushrooming in to serious security disasters that together claimed more than one hundred lives.
The assembly, held at DOT headquarters in Dc, was called by Foxx to tackle his problem that "the community has lost faith in the automotive industry's dedication to security," Foxx stated in a Nov. 3 letter inviting an exec to the summit got by Automotive News.
The members comprised General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, Nissan North America Chairman Jose Munoz, Ford Vice-President for Sustainability, Environment, and Security Engineering Kim Pittel as well as other senior executives. Other associates in the auto makers also attended.
"We had a successful conversation on the significant security problems confronting our business, and we're delighted to be a part of the conversation," General Motors said in an emailed statement. "This kind of business and authorities discussion is in the very best interest of general vehicle security, and significantly, our clients. We look ahead to continuing the dialogue."
One automobile executive who attended the assembly with Foxx stated the secretary expressed a wish to have car companies as well as the authorities to work more strongly on security problems, simply to determine automobile flaws and fishing gear recalls more rapidly.
Foxx also pressed auto makers for thoughts about how to reach those aims, the exec said, who requested to not be identified as the meeting was private.
"Participants were requested to come prepared with ideas to reveal, and invest another month working toward tangible obligations to sector-wide security measures," Kolachalam stated in the declaration. "We see this assembly as a great and significant measure within an on-going dialogue involving the U.S. DOT and auto-industry executives."
An FCA spokesman declined to discuss the assembly as well as a Honda spokesman affirmed Honda's involvement in the meeting but declined to elaborate past the Transportation Department's declaration.
