Do Not Disturb: How Your Next Car Will Prevent Distracted Driving
It is the thought behind workload direction, an area of intense research.
It begins with discovering when the motorist's workload is piling up. One method would be to quantify the driver's heart rate and respiration using detectors on seatbelt and the steering wheel.

Another means of determining driver workload is by tracking inputs.
Eventually, these systems may also analyze time of day info, traffic, weather, and road to infer when driving states are needing and frantic. The best determination of driver workload will probably be some combination of those approaches.
The result? "Quite a few vehicles have a do-not-bother button," says Filev. "This system might participate mechanically during intervals of high driver workload." "But interrupting a call could be going too much," says Feit. "That could get a motorist to make an effort to override the system--which would raise distraction."

The research on workload direction is not just about distraction, however. "When motorists are understimulated, they are tired and bored," says Feit.
Filev includes that these tracking systems could even reduce some limitations, while the car is in motion, for example programming the nav system. Whether these computerized gatekeepers are interpreted by motorists as a pain or a blessing will not be understood until generation is reached by vehicles at least three or two years down the road.
