Already the upcoming year BMW will present a first production model equipped with the plug-in hybrid technology eDrive. That technology will be equipped in 3, 5 and 7-series cars. However, the first hybrid model is the 3-series.
The brand’s plug-in hybrid technology consists of an electric motor and the internal combustion engine. The electric motor is the lithium-ion battery, which charged by regenerative braking or even at home.
The new 3-series hybrid is equipped with the four-cylinder turbocharged engine similar to the unit of the X5; that powertrain works with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The drive is only rear-wheel as well. The output is 245 horsepower and the torque of 295 lb-ft. The novelty is able to move about 22 miles electric drive only. The maximum speed at the electric mode is 74.5 mph.
The 3-series plug-in hybrid has three modes: Comfort, Sport and ECO Pro. Moreover, owners may adjust suspension settings and others depending on gearbox and version.
The automaker predicts after improved battery technologies, the internal combustion engines will be used only driving on long distances or high-loading cases, and then they may be canceled at all. The electric motors allow reducing the fuel consumption and meeting requirement of emission standard.
In spite of that, we cannot tell about the cancelling of high performance. No. The moder technology and improved development of batteries allow the electric motors produce the output of about 670 horsepower.
