Michigan driverless car testing site opens Monday

The University of Michigan will formally start its new testing website for affiliated and driverless vehicles on Monday.
The 3 2-acre screening grounds, called Mcity, were created to model urban and sub-urban streets using a system of managed junctions, traffic lights, street-lights, sidewalks, building obstructions and much more, the college said in a statement.
The $6.5 million check monitor is managed by UM's Mobility Transformation Heart and is an expansion of a $22-million, federally funded pilot program to examine linked vehicle systems at the university.
In the year 2012, the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute established a safety pilot application, including the installation of automobiles, business vans, buses and bikes equipped with transmitters and data logging devices to monitor location, acceleration and speed of automobiles and infrastructure.
At least 9,000 automobiles are outfitted with the technologies, which is examined throughout the Ann Arbor region.
The occasion on Monday at Mcity will feature demonstrations from nearby providers and undertaking members, including Robert Bosch LLC, Delphi Automotive plc and Denso International America Inc.
