Next generation of C8 and ZR1 will be equipped with a middle-mounted engine
Currently, Corvette is talking about development of the middle-mounted powertrain. Certainly, it was not a secret, the auto manufacturer said about it earlier. If you are able to remember, there were some Corvette concept cars, which were presented as vehicles equipped with mid-placed engines. However, only the CERV III, which was introduced at the show in Detroit in 1990, had the mid-engine.
Meanwhile, according to the unconfirmed resources, now the carmaker is working on development the middle-placed engine for the latest ZR1. Moreover, some rumors said, the auto manufacturer planned to equip the all lineup of the Corvette C8 with the middle-mounted engine too.
The first reason is to improve the car performance to be able to compare with the 2016 Camaro, which built on the Alpha. Thus, the middle-mounted engine will allow improving the performance of the novelty not only for meeting competition with the latest Camaro, but also for Audi R8 and Honda/Acura NSX as well.
The second important reason is that recently the General Motors had applied the new trademark “Zora”. For whom has not known, the “Zora” was the first name of Corvette established by Zora Arkus-Duntov. In fact, he preferred to equip a car with the middle-placed powertrain then. Thus, it is the best way to honor the great engineer to call the Corvette with a middle-mounted engine by his name.
However, it had happened before the starting of the General Motor’s bankruptcy, when the next Corvette C7 had to be also redesigned. Unfortunately, they were and they are only rumors around the new mid-engine production for Corvette models.
In spite of we are expecting to see the new Corvette equipped with the mid-engine in comparing with other super cars in the world, nowadays, we do not have any confirmed information about that.
