The nine-speeds promise less inner friction and fewer moving parts. They also give a wider range in gear ratios that allow a B-segment car to cruise at high speeds while still at relatively low rpms.
The trick is to fit more things into a footprint that kept small enough to fit into a tiny car's engine compartment.
The concept uses a classic clutch style called "dog clutches" that has long been found in heavy-duty signals.
Dog clutches require fewer components than the gear system of a conventional automatic transmission.
"I had this silly idea that dog grabs could work," Ebenhoch recalls. "I never thought, when we submitted the patent on it, that it was really going to occur someday."
East-west structure
Until now, ZF's business has been tilted heavily toward signals for large cars and trucks. Its eight-speed transmission plant in Saarbruecken, Germany, is running full tilt giving designs for BMW, Audi, Bentley, Chrysler Group, Jaguar and Land Rover.
"East-west" is the common business term for such designs, in which a transmission is positioned alongside the motor between the front wheels. Rear-wheel vehicles have greater, weightier signals that are placed longitudinally and are called "north-south."
ZF is banking that it might develop into a major worldwide player within the part. It'll open a factory in Grey Court, S.C., that will help its entry into east-west car structure that summer.
Its technology was shopped by the corporation around five years back, vowing to go forward with the South Carolina project once it had three clients under contract. Those were Chrysler, Land Rover and a third consumer that ZF has not yet identified.
The $430 million plant will be the greatest investment ZF has ever made outside Germany. Ebenhoch says the plant will represent the major section of ZF's North American company in-the coming years.
Off-road credibility
That is significant for Land Rover, a brandname created to drive back-road country estates and jungle-clogged byways, Mitchell says.
"It gives us a lesser gear for low-speed slide, for steep hills. It enhances our off-road credibility," he says.
Can however more items be necessary in the foreseeable future, going beyond the eight he's getting ready to market this year?
"Having a six-speed was sufficient a few years ago," he admits. "But moving forward, it requires to become more."
