Volvo details XC90 T8's hybrid system
Volvo has detailed the plug-in hybrid system that powers the XC90 T8, providing what the company describes as luxury SUV-level performance with emissions comparable to small hybrid cars.
The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Drive-E engine takes advantage of both a turbocharger and supercharger to maximize output from relatively low displacement, contributing 318 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.Additional power is delivered by an electric motor positioned on the rear axle to drive the back wheels. It can provide up to 82 ponies and 177 lb-ft of torque, bringing the grand total up to 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. The management system automatically switches between gasoline or electric power to optimize fuel consumption. The XC90's eight-speed automatic gearbox has also been adapted for the hybrid configuration, while a 34kW starter motor -- serving also as a generator and an engine booster -- helps smooth the transition between operation modes. The battery, located in the tunnel of the vehicle, provides enough to juice to drive for 25 miles on electricity alone. It is regenerated via a two-step braking system, using brake-by-wire technology and a stability control to maximize generation without losing grip."The XC90 T8 is a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one," said Volvo R&D senior VP Dr. Peter Mertens. "The Drive-E engines already offer highly competitive performance versus the competition. The T8 takes it further into a leading position."
