Nissan Skyline R34-GT Reviews
A decade before, ancestors of the R34 Skyline could are derisorily labeled as 'gray' imports; refugees from the state (Japan) having a registration fee construction that produces possession of older versions prohibitively pricey.
Such was the panic created in parts of the area sector that Australia would follow Nz in re-homing numerous Japanese castoffs a campaign was mounted to demonise used-vehicle imports.
Those same forces also effectively lobbied for ordinances to severely limit the amounts and kinds of employed imports that could be offered here, pregnancy for the Registered Automotive Workshop Scheme (RAWS). While RAWS damage a number of the low quantity sector's shonkier components, it unknowingly sent a level greater scope of desired versions that hadn't ever produced it onto nearby showroom floorings.
The R34 Skyline first noticed Japanese streets in late 1997 and was met with acclamation from the motoring media along with lovers. Turbo (GTT) and non-turbo GT variations were provided, with fundamental 2.0-litre variants of the straight-six having an useful 116kW as the 2.5-litre single turbo handled 209kW. Even without turbo increase, 2.5-litre forms of the 2-4-valve, double-overhead cam motor generate 149kW and operate 0-100km/h in around nine seconds.
These are now proving popular with younger Aussie buyers who need the kudos of Skyline possession without violating the no-turbos-to get-P-platers laws that works in several states.
Fourdoor variants seem a little drab but the coupe - with or without elective trunk spoiler - is sleek without being ostentatious. The stock, 17-inch metals seem ok but many purchasers picked for the bigger and smarter Nismo alloys and lots of autos within the local marketplace have them.
Except for the hard-to-locate 4WD GT-T and the pricey twinturbo GTR, all R34s are rear-wheel drive with coil springs as well as and rear and ventilated, ABS-equipped disks all round. Turbo automobiles come with a viscous limited-slip differential and heavy duty tools bunches. HICAS all-wheel steering system is shared with the GTR and makes these really nimble for a biggish automobile.
R34s came with five-speed manual or four-speed Tiptronic semi-auto transmission. The car supplies a traditional gear selector plus buttons on the steering wheel to command upward and downshifts.
Nissan spent a lot of cash ensuring that the version that would take Skyline into the Twenty-First Century seemed great, clearly and managed better. Unfortunately, that left little for an inside makeover so the R34 remained a sanctuary for drab materials and gray plastic.
That's a shame, because the strongly-connected Stagea RS station wagon we attempted a while back was brimming with imitation lumber, actual leather trimming and some fine touches including electrically-
Flexible seats.
ON THE ROAD
Putter around township without venturing beyond the GTT and 3500rpm provides nice operation without showing its real character. Maximum torque arrives at 3200rpm which is useful for a turbo-automobile.
0-400 metres in 14.9 seconds looks a little slow for a car of this calibre and could be enhanced if you're prepared to start at 4500prm. Electricity peaks at 6400rpm so upshifting before reaching the limiter is urged.
The power steering with 2.7 turns lock-to-lock is superb and delivers info faster than the 'verbal and authorised' license plate on a political ad. Through a sequence of bumpy and tight curves, the nose could be pushed broad but just as readily brought under control with a nudge of accelerator feathering and additional lock. Even under this type of use there was no idea that the GTT was contemplating locking a wheel.
Requested to deliver on a less than perfect surface, the 45 section tyres fight to fit the skills of a great chassis. Purchasers who need to work or improve the GTT's operation will probably go looking for an uprated wheel/tyre combination.
The manual automobile's ratios are nicely disperse, with third gear permitting simple suburban cruising or a total-bore overtaking blast that will shove it really swiftly into 'pull over, motorist' land. The only negative of the five-speed is the shifter itself, which feels and seems like something nicked from the Tiida parts bin.
In type, the four-speed GTT can be driven like a traditional automatic or switched using thumb-activated buttons. While they seem to be a little cumbersome, the buttons are supposedly simple to use and supply faster answer than the sometimes puzzled shifter in the manual automobile.
Front seat accommodation is great and the greatly- without smashing your ribcage decent support is provided by bolstered buckets.
Fuel consumption is, of course, greatly dependent on how the automobile will be driven. Japanese-tested 2.5-litre 'atmo' autos were said to return close-on 10L/100km, with mindful punting in a Tiptronic GT-T adding just one-fifth to the fuel statement.
Purchaser's Checklist
BODY & CHASSIS
Any R34 that's revealing signs of rust or paint deterioration needs to be given a leading swerve. There are way too many great ones accessible to contemplate an auto that will want prompt and pricey bodywork. Crashes are an ever present threat with this type of automobile, thus make sure that all panels are correctly aligned, doors shut readily and the fenders aren't free or cracked.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Excessive boost kills these engines faster than anything else, so automobiles that have been changed need to be evaluated with extreme care. "You learn of RB25s being blown up but normally it's because someone is attempting to run mindless quantities of increase," Paul Dean warns. Smoke of any type from the exhaust is a leading risk sign. The cooling system must be preserved as well and budgeting for a whole potential and flush radiator replacement will be cash prudently invested. Clutch shudder suggests previous mistreatment and replacements are pricey; heavy duty single-plate units cost around $2000.
SUSPENSION & BRAKES
Brakes that don't provide quick stops without juddering or crabbing are likely due for replacing. Gentlyused rotors can survive 60-80,000 kilometres but assess for scoring and discolouration. Soft, bouncy front suspension indicates possibly the springs themselves, bushes and worn-out shock absorbers. A total suspension overhaul using regular components prices close to $3500. Assess the alloy wheels for kerb damage and tyres for irregular wear. Have someone view when inverse parking to see if the all-wheel steering system is operating.
INSIDE & ELECTRICS
R34 insides are hardwearing and autos revealing less than 120,000kilometers should not be showing leading trim damage. Assess that the driver's power window switch doesn't work with the ignition off - it should have been changed when the automobile was honoured. In deference to local jurisprudence, the low-glare Xenon headlamp bulbs had to be replaced with H1 spheres but reversion to initial is potential additionally.
