Canada threatens action against VW if rules violated

OTTAWA (Bloomberg) -- The Canadian government is vowing unspecified "enforcement actions" if Volkswagen automobiles sold in the state used pollution-masking technologies.
The firm, which is expanding in Canada and retains a 3.9% marketshare, is now under investigation by Environment Canada, section spokesman Mark Johnson stated. The bureau is working together with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the firm to inquire claims the auto-maker employed "defeat device" applications to hide vehicle emissions.
"Defeat apparatus are prohibited under Canadian rules. If infringements to Canadian regulations are discovered, enforcement actions will soon be taken," Johnson stated within an e-mail Tuesday.
Volkswagen had a record month in Canada in August, the organization said, and its own sales were up 5.6% from the same month a year previously, information from Desrosiers Automotive display. Volkswagen is the eighth-rated car retailer by revenue volume, with 50,418 models offered so far in 2015, 13% ahead of its rate in 2014. It will not run an assembly plant in Canada.
Canada aligns its emissions requirements for new automobiles using the United States of America, Johnson stated. The probe is continuing and "it will be improper to comment more," he stated. "Automobile owners should be aware of the effectivity of a vehicle's air pollutant management apparatus isn't a security problem."
The state's Environmental Safety Act permits major companies to be fined up to $6million Canadian ($4.5 million) for an initial violation, and up to $1 2 million Canadian for subsequent violations.
Environment Canada "acted promptly to analyze possible consequences" after understanding of the problem, Johnson stated.
Petitions for comment from Volkswagen Canada were not instantly came back Tuesday.
