Daimler, Qualcomm to develop in-car tech, wireless charging

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- Daimler A G is forming a partnership with cellular systems firm Qualcomm Inc. to investigate wireless recharging of mobile telephones in automobiles as good as recharging of electric automobiles without transmission lines.
The transfer forms part of a broader drive by Daimler, parent company of Mercedes Benz, along with competing German car-makers BMW and Audi to develop their expertise in applications and telecom to reinforce their standing as hightech car-makers in a age when tightening discharge rules compel them to down-size engines, once a mainstay of net income.
In a joint statement Saturday, Daimler and Qualcomm stated these were were evaluating the use of wireless technologies to charge their electric vehicles and plug in hybrid EVs without actually needing to plug them in.
The firms will also be investigating technologies that can make it possible for clients to wirelessly bill devices like cellular telephones while driving within their car, along with strategies to improve in-vehicle expertise through high speed 3G/4G connectivity.
"It is necessary that people stay on the frontier of technology and keep to provide unparalleled encounters to our clients," stated Thomas Weber, Daimler's board member for research development.
"With this in your mind, we're ready to collectively investigate possible fields of future co-operation with the internationally leading technology company like Qualcomm," Weber said in a statement.
Germany's premium automakers are presently on a tear to mass up their engineering experience, and therefore are readying an offer for Nokia's mapping department HERE.
