US senators seek to ensure Takata recall is completed

District of Columbia (Reuters) -- Two powerful U.S. senators, worried about Takata Corp.'s skill to finish its recall of possibly fatal airbag inflators, sought regulatory advice on the best way to support the Japan firm liable if its U.S. subsidiary company goes broke.
"We have issues about Takata's fiscal solvency, which will be now at threat ... and that consequently, consumers may be left with faulty airbags that no one will likely be required to mend," Democratic Senators Richard Blumenthal and Edward Markey stated in a letter to the NHTSA on Monday.
Takata should pay a $70 million money fee and may be fined up to $130-million if it does not keep to the re-call program. Important customers, including Honda Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Co., have dropped the firm's airbag inflators, while Takata H-AS slashed its earnings outlook and its shares have fallen dramatically.
"These developments enhance the the anxiety these obligations could overwhelm the organization and direct Takata Corporation to break its U.S. subsidiary company," the senators wrote to NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind.
Blumenthal and Markey asked Rosekind how the United States government can ensure that alternative inflators will be accessible for U.S. automobile owners and how prices for the re-call and possible fees would be managed in case of a bankruptcy.
NHTSA officers are not immediately available for comment.
A week past, NHTSA announced substantial fines and an accelerated program for removing Takata airbag inflators which can be linked to at least eight departures from USA's routes. Regulators additionally ordered the firm to phase-out use of ammonium nitrate propellant, as portion of among the most important automotive recalls in US history.
