ZF TRW's new facility airbag is among the products you see and immediately think, "Yeah, that makes sense." It retains the driver and front seat occupant from smashing in to each other when the vehicle is hit in the side, helping lessen injury to the heads, shoulders and torso regions of the folks up front.
Dirk Schultz, international engineering manager for ZF TRW inflatable restraints techniques, stated in a news release that the threat to the front seat passenger is "substantial" when the vehicle is hit in the side.
"Injury research suggests that in america, almost 30% of side-impact fatalities include significantly-side [passenger-side] occasions, as well as in Germany, almost 30 percent of seriously wounded occupants in side crashes resulted from a far-side collisions," he stated.
The facility airbags are still not in production vehicles but Schultz stated there's growing fascination with the technology. The air bags also may get a boost from European automobile testing service EuroNCAP, which will be evaluating new side impact evaluation protocols for 2018 and beyond.
