WOLFSBURG, Germany (Reuters) -- Volkswagen rigged discharge tests on about 2.8 million diesel automobiles in Germany, German Transportation Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated on Friday, almost six times as many as it's confessed to falsifying in the U.S.
His remarks, pointing to cheating on a larger scale than formerly believed, deepened the disaster at Volkswagen as its supervisory board held a critical meeting.
"It is now clear that automobiles in Germany are impacted by these exploitations. According to our present knowledge they're autos with 2.0-litre and 1.6-liter diesel engines," Dobrindt informed Germany's Bundestag lower house of parliament.
Dobrindt also stated there was a chance of 1.2-liter diesel engines being changed, too.
Volkswagen said this week that irregularities on diesel-emission readings expand to 1 1 million vehicles worldwide with Kind EA 189 engines.
Germany's car certificate agency has asked Volkswagen for "a binding statement on if the firm can re-dress the specialized exploitation it's recognized so the vehicles could be returned into a state that matches technical rules," mentioned Dobrindt, who set up a authorities investigating commission this week after Volkswagen's activities came to light.
Volkswagen "has pledged total support for the commission's function also to collaborate in the probe," he stated.
Regulators and prosecutors around the world are investigating the scandal.
The European Commission has encouraged all EU member-states to inquire into just how many automobiles use prohibited "defeat" apparatus to deceive discharges evaluations in mild of the Volkswagen entry.
France will carry out screening on its routes to confirm whether vehicles are designed with restricted applications of the type employed by Volkswagen. Italy will examine 1,000 autos from all the VW manufacturers offered nationwide, its transportation minister said.
